Callsigns UK Callsign Changes for 2E calls and M8 and M9 calls M8 and M9 calls are new prefixes for UK Intermediate amateur radio licenses, replacing the older '2E' series. New Intermediate licensees will receive M8 or M9 call signs, and existing holders of '2E' licenses can change theirs to the new format via the Ofcom online portal. This change simplifies the licensing framework and offers a more consistent format across different license levels.

Key aspects of the M8 and M9 calls

Who they are for, UK Intermediate license holders.

What they replace: The older '2E' (England) and '2E1' prefixes.

How to get one: New licensees: Will be issued an M8 or M9 call sign automatically.

Existing licensees: Can log in to the Ofcom licensing portal to change their existing call sign to the new format.

Benefits:

Consistency: Creates a uniform call sign format across all license levels. Simplicity: Regional Secondary Locators (RSLs) like 'MM' for Scotland are no longer required unless desired.

Important notes: Changing to an M8 or M9 call sign is optional for existing licensees, but they can continue to use their '2E' call sign.

If you change your call to the new M8 or M9 you MUST go to My Profile and set the QTH Ending Date your 2E account and Register a new Attached Account for the new call. You must not then use the 2E call account for new uploads, but you can still correct any error in the old logs. Award credits earnt with your 2E call will be shared with the new call, as will all membership payments.

The change is part of broader updates to the amateur radio licensing framework, which also include more flexible Special Event call signs and a move toward a single personal call sign.
