Would a (for a fee) service offering to store an amateur's full log on a remote server be a possibility?

For the amateur it would give the security of knowing a copy of their logs resides securely off-site.

For eQSL it could be an apportunity to provide another unique service and help support the eQSL system economically.

Such a system would need to store more than the reduced field set of the eQSL format, and it would make sense to allow logs to be uploaded once for both posting as eQSLs and for eQSL Log Archiving.

Just a suggestion.

We don't mind people uploading their entire logs. In fact we have several people who have uploaded over 100,000 records. We encourage it, and will keep backfilling disk space to accomodate all logs. Right now we are only using 1/3 of the disk space we have available, and we already have over 55 million log records. That disk space is Raid 5 which means it is spread over 3 separate disk systems to provide both redundancy and high speed. The entire database is backed up daily. So we have a lot of capacity.

When you say "reduced field set", you are correct that we import a specific set of data required to generate a QSL card. There are ADIF fields that we do not import. The only problem I see with your idea is that I believe you are asking us to store the ADIF in its native format, in order to conserve every single field that might be contained in the log. Due to the nature of ADIF 2 with its user-defined fields, we cannot predict all the possible data that might be stored in the record, so we can't really create a SQL Server database to contain *ALL* of the fields.

So, the long and short of it is this: We encourage people to upload their entire logs, and if there were to be sufficient demand for a native format ADIF storage, we might entertain that as a possible feature, maybe for Silver or Gold members or something.

Of course, that's just my opinion... I could be wrong!

I would certainly feel it worthwhile to pay an EXTRA annual fee to have a full native ADIF (2) format log stored on a remote server.

Whether for access needs while traveling or replacement in case of something catastrophic, it could be cheap insurance.

Thank you for listening!
