eAward Suggestions » "Lower 48" 6 Meter WAS Award (or 2 meters as well) Dec 30, 2015 09:57 PM (Total replies: 0)

Hi, before AK and HI joined as states, the WAS on 6 meter band was tough but doable with moderate stations (3 el beam and 100 watts). Now it is rare to even hear these two states from most of USA, not to mention Europe and elsewhere. When the band is hot, so is aurora in most of AK. As a stepping stone on the way to the full ARRL/eQSL WAS, and in the spirit of an Associate Degree on way to a BA/BS, The 50 country eDX award, or the WAC as waypoints on the way to DXCC, I propose a "6 METER LOWER 48" award. Nice certif to earn, as an intermediate step to the very difficult full 6 Meter WAS. Also to consider, is that the many of the new 6 Meter hams are also "mature" like myself (ham for 55 years and 71 years old) and, given the plunging sunspot cycle, will be unlikely to be alive for the next peak.

I recently heard HI for the first time in several years of diligent listening. I have a 44 ft high tower on a tall hilltop, with a 5 el M2, a preamp on top and another at rig end of a K3 and 125W out. He never heard me even between the KW "big guns" who buried my signals. The KH station faded after a few minutes. This is typical from the midwest and east USA. Despite years of listening and watching DXWATCH, etc. I have never even heard AK on 6. WAS was never meant to be that hard.

I have a good station, VUCC level around 200 grids, a few Europeans and many Carribean and SA QSO's and QSL cards from all lower 48 states. My experience is typical and those with lesser antennas have a hard time even achieving that much.

As a continuation of the old pre-HI/AK statehood 6M WAS, I believe that a LOWER 48 6 Meter Award is still a tough (but not unreasonably so with dilligence and luck) achievement that should be acknowledged, as the full WAS becomes more and more out of reach by most non-moonbounce level stations.

DX » IOTA member info on AS201 Dec 30, 2015 09:39 PM (Total replies: 0)

Hi, those who worked me as TA0/WA2KBZ, due to illness (stroke, no rt arm for a while and vision issues) that has now somewhat improved, I am way behind on hard copy QSL's. However I promptly reply to eQSL's which count in many places. Also, my Buyukada Island is near Istanbul at entrance of the Bosphorus. It had, until recently, no IOTA number. There is another Turkish island of same name in the Med, AS123. This caused much confusion, Now, after much pleading the HQ of IOTA has awarded a number to the Istanbul area Buyukada (search Google, very beautiful place); AS-201. Those who have older version of my eQSL can resnd req to me (change time by 1 minute perhaps) and I will send a revised eQSL with the AS201 printed on it for IOTA awards. This is fairly rare (at least until made a few thousand QSO's there), so I hope it helps your IOTA scores. Best 73 Karl

PS: you may be able to just download, print or whatever the existing contact and I think the new AS # may appear.
